Happy Anniversary 2023 ❤️

26.10.23 This is our 10th wedding anniversary and 16 years together. I can't help but reflect on the incredible journey we've been on together. Over the past decade, we've faced joys and challenges, and I am deeply grateful for the love and companionship you've brought into my life.

For the past months, we have been planning what to get for each other. We wanted something special and memorable since it’s our 1st decade in marriage.

And this is what we got for each other.

And we renewed our vows.

Our vows

We promise to continue loving and cherishing each other, even more than we did on our wedding day. We promise to be each other’s unwavering support through all the highs and lows that life brings our way. We vow to be partners in all of our adventures, big and small, and to never stop exploring and discovering the world together.

We pledge to keep the flame of passion burning in our relationship, to always be open and honest in our communication, and to be patient and understanding when times get tough. We promise to laugh together, cry together, and grow old together, creating countless beautiful memories together.

In sickness and in health, in joy and in sorrow, through all the years to come, we promise to be faithful, loving, and devoted partner.

I look forward to spending the rest of my life by your side, building a future filled with love, laughter, and endless happiness.

And the witness for this special occasion?

Our 2 boys!

It’s a good day.

Till our next anniversary.

With love,

Evelyn

Happy Anniversary!

Marriage

It has been a year since we signed on the dotted line to be legally bound to each other.

For the past 6 years before our marriage, my husband and I were almost glued to each other and have never been apart for more than a month.

This time round, we have been separated for more than 3 months.
During this period, I have reflected on our marriage. Maybe the fact that we have been always together made marriage the natural next step in life. We have been through disputes, taken steps back to accommodate and finally find a balance in our relationship. Hence, marriage has seemed to be an inevitable next step.

However, during the recent 3 months, when my husband went overseas to work, it makes me understand and discover many things and to reflect once again on our relationship.
When two become one, what is it about?
Is it about losing part of ourselves to take in another one?
Without him, many decisions in life will be made differently. A simple thing like how I will spend my weekend is  a lot different with and without him.
Why should we get married?
After much reflection, I have listed the following.

1. Lifetime Companion

We as human beings have the desire to find companionship be it friends, family or partner. It’s a natural instinct that we do not like being alone and yearn to have a sense of belonging in a group.
Moreover, it is true that opposite genders have natural attraction to each other, though most of the time, it’s physical. The union of a man and woman is almost purely a human desire to feel complete.
Of course, not all people will find their half. Especially in current society where people are more independent and woman being less dependent. For such cases, we seek alternatives or find comfort from friends and family.
So it seems like there’s no need to be married if there’re other sources of companionship.
But ideally, marriage is a desired source since friends and family may not be able to be with you all the time.

2. Procreation and Building of Family

I personally think that it’s almost a MUST for all married couple to try to have babies. This may be one of the ultimate goals in marriage. Without the needs to procreate and to provide children with a complete normal family, it may not even be necessary to be married.

3. Emotion and Financial Support

We seek emotion and financial support through companionship. In difficult times, we all seek support. A husband and wife structure, in my opinion, is the best source of constant support. I guessed that’s why before we sign on the paper, we have to swear to love and care for each other through sickness and difficult times.

Human beings have strong adaptability since we have evolved through centuries to become the most intelligent animal on planet.  Husband and wife relationship may seem to be less important as people adapt and forge alternative relationships for support.
However, I do believe marriage can help two people who complement each other to become better.

Marriage is not to consume individuality.
Without each other, we should still be able to stand on our own with our own source of support and social circle. I am glad that my husband has gone overseas during this period; it makes me understand the importance of my other parts of life such as friends and career. Friends for emotional support and career to be financially sound.

I used to think that when two persons get married, they should be glued to each other.  This is not true.
When two persons get married, it supposed to be more than one. We should be able to love and develop ourselves more and provide freedom to each other.  Of course, to love each other more each day.

Happy Anniversary, my dearest half.

You have made me complete and provide me with the security to be the best of me.
I love you.

Is it necessary to have a wedding lunch/dinner?

Today, while chatting with my female colleague who is getting married soon, our conversations lead to the debate on this question,

Is it necessary to have a wedding lunch/dinner?
Her opinion is that there is no need to have a wedding as the money can be spent on more meaningful things, such as travelling or house renovation.

She believes that wedding dinner now a days is more for the couple to please their relatives and in the expense of their time and money.

It's true to a certain extend.

I personally agree that wedding is not actually necessary.

It's more a want than need.
However, I think it's not always the case that couples have wedding to please the elders.

Very often, couples follow tradition and have wedding lunch/dinner so that relatives and friends can be informed of their marriage. More for elder relatives than friends (since, in current era, friends can be informed through facebook's status).

To me, my wedding is not about pleasing elders' wish, instead is to please myself.

MARRIAGE is ideally once in a life time.

And wedding is usually a one time thing too.

So I'll like it to be memorable

Yes, I agree that wedding is troublesome, costly and time consuming.
But at the same time, it's memorable, great to have friends and relative there to witness the event and also a once in a life time experience to record.

I've never regretted holding a wedding dinner. I can still remember my first march in after they played the video made by my hubby followed by my favourite love song "Thousand Years". It's just too beautiful to be true.

I guess it's the effort made in the wedding that makes a wedding memorable.

For my wedding, we try to plan and do most of the stuffs by ourselves including video montage and actual day performance.

Even the 2nd march in montage is made by my hubby. He spent nights after work to make all the videos. I am really touch.

It has always been my dream to dance with my husband on our special day and I'm happy that we've realized it.

To some people, they may think that wedding that goes over showy is fake.

However, don't you think, wedding which the couple had put in a lot of time and effort, is more memorable?

Moreover, memorable wedding is not necessary expensive.

I guess wedding is all about what a couple wants.

Simple, showy, expensive, or no wedding. Ultimately, it should depend on what the couple wants and there should be no regret after.

How to Prepare a Wedding in 6 Month?

I still remember clearly that on the night, right after the proposal, after changing our relationship status on facebook from "in relationship" to "engaged", many friends enquired about when will be our big date. And all I've replied were "not so soon", "have not thought of the wedding". And in my mind, I'm thinking, I can do without a wedding since it's probably going to be troublesome, time-consuming, costly and tiring to plan a wedding.

Weeks after the proposal.....
while I was still immersed in the feeling of surprise and love, my fiance popped a question,
"when should we get married?".
And I looked at him with a blank look, "don't know"
Then he mentioned, how good will it be if we will to get married on 26 Oct, our dating anniversary?
We went to look at the calendar and so happened that 26 Oct 13 is a Saturday! How fantastic! "Maybe it's not a bad idea to have a wedding"
The only concern .. it's happening in 6 months time!
A few options we thought of, should we have it outdoor? In a restaurant?or In a hotel ballroom?

1. Outdoor Wedding:
  • Pros: We can design it into a fairytale scene with lots of flowers or make it into a Twilight inspired wedding with garden theme "so beautiful"
  • Cons: What if it rains? How much time required to coordinate the set up? Moreover, even if it never rain, Singapore weather is so humid and hot

2. Restaurant Wedding:
  • Pros: Less pricey, maybe better food quality if we find a good restaurants
  • Cons: Did not managed to find a restaurant available which have my ideal aisle. To me, one of the most important moment in wedding is when the bride walks down the aisle. The aisle is like the path to love and happiness "something I can't do without"

3. Hotel Wedding:
  • Pros: Indoor, able to get a beautiful aisle, classy, a few hotels provide very good food quality, easy to coordinate, more convenient
  • Cons: maybe more expensive

So we felt that hotel wedding seem to has more pros than cons and we decided to go for it.

We've about 6 months to the day. Are we able to make it in time?

Next day, I immediately sent emails to all the hotels in Singapore to enquire on the ballroom availability at 26 Oct 2013.

Luckily, there is this website: http://singaporebrides.com/banquets.php which features all wedding banquets' names, pricing, email and contact numbers. It makes finding a the location easier, much easier.

After receiving the replies from hotels, we shortlisted a few and went on site visit. We've made a few appointments on weekends and took pictures of the venue.

I realized that I need to set my requirements in order to decide.

My requirements:

  • Beautiful aisle
  • Price not more than 1500 per table (inclusive of GST and service charge)
  • Good food quality (knowing that my guest know how to enjoy food)
  • Convenient location
  • High ceiling (looks nicer)
  • Preferably without pillars (Pillars is distracting and may block the view of certain tables)
  • Of course good perks (but that's depend on your bargaining skills)

After one week.....
And going through the list of hotels, I found one which fits all my requirements and is available on 26 Oct 13! Guess it's fated for us to get married on this day.

Most people told us that good wedding location usually need to be booked 1 yr in advance.
BUT surprisingly, when I enquired hotels 6 months before my expected date, there are many which returned with availability.

"Luckily married"

The Proposal: My Birthday Surprise? Oh no, it's a Proposal!

At age 25, I've never imaged that marriage can be such a happy thing.

I shall recap how shock I am when he turned my birthday surprise into a proposal.
"Hope that this blog post will help me to keep a record of this precious memory"

I'm really one who is hard to surprise. I hate myself for that because I just missed the fun of surprise.
But this time, he did surprise me....

My birthday: 5th April
The day: 6th April

I still remember clearly that it was a Saturday.
I kind of guessed that my friends and my bf (at that time), will try to give me a birthday surprise.

On 6th April, he took me to Timbre @ The Arts House. As expected, my friends were there to surprise me, "Happy Birthday!!".
Everything seems like what I've expected, surprise cake, chit chatting and having food.
At close to 11, while I thought the night was late, and we shall head home, my bf went up on stage to sing a song! "so sweet <3"

All I had in my mind was birthday, birthday, and birthday, like it's everything for my birthday.
But after the song, he started saying mushy stuffs "blush".

And all of the sudden, I had this feeling "Oh! Is he really going to do it?"

I'm glad that my best friend took a video of the whole process

I am really touch when I heard him said about all the things we've went through. I can still remember the special feeling.
However, besides feeling happy, I had a mixing feeling like "OMG, what should I do". Many thoughts flashed through my mind.
Should I stand up now?
Should I run towards him? or
Should I just wait there?....
I really don't know how to react.
"Not sure do all the other girls experienced this when their bf proposed"

In the end, my friend has to slowly push me to the side of the chair where he kneel down in front of me.
  I said "I do"

That moment, I felt like my fairy tale has finally came true.

My hubby told me that Timbre has been really helpful and cooperative for the proposal, especially, the part where they allowed my hubby to perform on stage and play along to smoke bomb me.

And Yes, I accepted the ring

Thanks to all my friends for being part of this special day

Cheers!
Thanks to Timbre's Manager who make this possible!

Thanks to the band for playing along

The proposal is at Timbre @ The Arts House, if you are a man reading this, you may consider making a proposal there. I've heard from my hubby that he reserved the place like 3 months in advance.

"When a man ask a woman to marry him, the women is blessed with love"
